The students began Unit 2 yesterday. The focus of this unit is Ratios, Rate and Proportional Reasoning. The proposed calendar is in the file below so you can keep up with when we are going to have quizzes and tests and what material will be covered. I hope you all have a great long weekend! See you on Tuesday.
Today, we took the Unit 2 pre-test in anticipation of starting our new unit. We also went over the Unit 1 test results and recorded the score on our test trackers. Please be reminded that students in advanced classes are required to maintain an 80% test average for the year to keep their advanced math designation for next year. Note: I do not allow students to take their tests home as I keep portfolios on all of them. Students are welcome to take pictures of their test to bring home. Homework: Complete the back side of last night's homework - Understanding Ratios.
Today the students took their Unit 1 End of Unit Test. There will be no homework as they had to study over the weekend.
Today the students spent some more time practicing dividing fractions and simplifying their answers. Homework is a study guide for their upcoming test on Monday. The answer key is also included and I encourage all students to check their answers. I will be out tomorrow, but there will be more reviewing for the test in class tomorrow. I hope you all have a great weekend.
Today the students practiced multiplication and division with fractions. This is the last new topic we will cover before our test. I will be out of class on Friday at a family function in Cleveland and so we will test on Unit 1 on Monday. Students should be studying all the content in their MSG. Review materials will be given tomorrow and Friday. Homework for tonight is the practice sheet below.
Today we reviewed fractions. The students practiced changing fractions for mixed numbers to improper and back again as well as simplifying.
HW: Complete pages 19, 20 and the left side of 21 in your MSG. Today we were given a presentation by our 6th Grade Guidance Counselor, Mrs. Would. We did not have math class. There is no homework for much of the class, but a few students will need to complete quiz corrections and recovery work due to a lower score on the quiz on Friday. Those corrections will be due on Friday to increase their score to a 70.
Today we reviewed all four decimal operations and completed a real world activity involving shopping. Homework is a crossword puzzle with the four decimal operations. Don't forget that tonight is East Cobb Middle School Back to School Night following the PTSA meeting at 5:15pm. This event is for parents ONLY. I hope to see you there.
Today we did some more long division practice and worked on long division word problems that require interpretation of remainders. Students need to remember that when we do word problems, we are given context and answers should reflect an understanding of what the numbers actually represent.
I hope your children are finding 6th grade to be a wonderful thing and I am hoping that they are loving math. Today we worked on using the standard algorithm to solve long division problems and then worked to understand what we need to do with remainders.
